Italy held on to secure a tense 3-2 victory over a spirited Russia in semis

Györ, Hungary. July 28 2017. Italy held on to secure a tense 3-2 (25-16, 25-21, 15-25, 25-27, 15-13) victory over a spirited Russia in semis of the 2017 Men’s European Youth Olympic Festival. Maxim Sapozhkov was impressive in coach Andrey Nozdrin in the 2&3 sets in charge and almost pulled off a huge upset against Italy. Russia were desperate to get back into the game in front of a vocal home crowd, however, Italy found an extra gear as they looked to snatch a dramatic late victory in 3-2. Maxim Sapozhkov was showing a willingness to spread the ball wide to score 23 points, in while the Italians Davide Gardini and Diego Cantagalli both defence under some pressure to mark 17 points.

In the 3rd place match, Russia will face Czech Republic again on July 29 at 14:00 local time.
